Year 10

CALVIN BRAITHWAITE played by Arnold Oceng
Calvin is a popular but mischievous boy with a vivid imagination which has got him into trouble.

When he first arrived at Grange Hill in 1999, Nathan refused to believe he had asthma and sent him to games. But while running he suffered a massive attack and was taken to hospital. Nathan was wracked with guilt but the pair called a truce. In Year 8 Calvin helped Darren look after Spencer after his parents did a runner and Arnie saved his life while he had another attack. Calvin refused to speak to Spencer after his confession that his dad attacked Mr Daniels, but Calvin soon realised he was wrong.

Calvin helped the other smuggle Amelia into school during Year 9. This year he was excluded by Mr Deverill for his part in the Desteeni Card stall.

DARREN CLARKE played by Adam Sopp
Darren is a quiet boy who loves animals, and is a follower rather than a leader. In Year 7 he was best friends with Spencer, but abandoned Spencer when he refused to back off Amy. He then found a stray rabbit and brought it to school where he and Mr Hankin looked after it. Darren hoped Refugee would become his own, but he was heartbroken when the owner came forward at the last minute.

In Year 8 he helped clean up Spencer's place with Calvin and the others. Darren feared his dad was keeping something sinister in the attic when he was packed off to Spencer's for the night. It turned out they were hiding Amelia from the authorities. Darren and Amelia became great friends and they went on the run together, fearing she would be caught. Ever loyal to Amelia, he accepted a caution for wasting police time; then he and Amelia were kidnapped and she was reunited with her father.

This year Darren and Calvin set up a Desteeni Card enterprise in a bid to attract girls. Mr Deverill excluded them both, convinced they were selling drugs!

AMY DAVENPORT played by Lindsey Ray
Amy is overcoming learning difficulties which led to bullying from Spencer, and is now one of the gang. She is best friends with Anika and a loyal friend.

In Year 7 she arrived at Grange Hill without school uniform and had to sell her fish tank to pay for one. Then Spencer, who cruelly nicknamed her "Mrs Bean", taunted her almost to breaking point about her learning difficulties. However, help was as hand from Special needs teacher Miss Walker and she stood up to Spencer. In Year 8 Amy and Anika developed a crush on Colin and pretended to be supermodels to meet him at the TV studios where he presented his film review programme. Amy was not central to the storyline in 2001 but helped smuggle Amelia into school and kept her company in the cellar.

Amy's mum was diagnosed with cancer, and died towards the end of the series. She's now looked after by Chaz, a rocker friend of Hatty. Anika's election as web site editor initially put a strain on their friendship.

SPENCER HARGREAVES played by Colin White
Spencer was a ruthless bully when he came to Grange Hill, and racist to boot. He mercilessly bullied Amy over her size and learning problems. But following his father's racist assault and the subsequent disappearance of his parents in Year 8, he realised how much he needed friends and he's now accepted as one of the gang.

Race no longer matters to him and his mother. When Spencer's mum finally returned from hiding Spencer brought his classmates round for tea and she realised what a bigot her husband was. This year, Spencer had to cope with his father's imprisonment for the attack. He admitted to the class what happened, and Calvin refused to speak to him at first. Spencer also suggested the uniform competition, eventually won by Max. In Year 10 Spencer attended the final gathering at Amy's and impressed everyone with his cooking.

ANIKA MODI played by Jalpa Patel
Anika is a studious but sometimes scheming Asian girl who can stand up to troublemakers with the greatest of ease. She's fiercely loyal to best mate Amy and is not afraid to speak her mind.

In Year 7 she took Amy under her wing and they helped put Spencer in his place. In Year 8 Spencer knocked Anika out cold in a racially-motivated playground fight, and later she almost reduced Spencer to tears with cruel jibes about his parents. Then she was persuaded to help him and Anika and Spencer became good friends. Anika ended the year faced with being moved out of Grange Hill by her mother, who was not impressed by her classmates. Eventually Mrs Modi was persuaded to let her stay. Anika was instrumental in smuggling Amelia into school last year and challenged Maddie for bullying Spencer.

This year Anika was elected school website editor. She clashed with Mr Deverill following publication of Leah's article and has been falsely accused of writing a damning page about Mrs Holmes.
