The Staff

MR PETER ROBSON played by Stuart Organ
Mr Robson is headmaster of Grange Hill. He's also the school's longest serving teacher, outlasting even Mrs McClusky! Mr Robson is well-liked by staff and pupils and enjoys a good working relationship with both. As a PE teacher he believed sport should be about taking part not winning, he also teaches maths and geography.

When Mr Robson came to Grange Hill in 1988 he was head of sport. His non-competitive approach to the subject angered Freddie Mainwaring, the school football captain. The following year he helped console Miss Booth after the death of Danny Kendall. In 1991 Mr Robson and Mrs Monroe took Year 10 to Dartmoor. He found it hard sharing a dormitory with the boys! Mr Robson was acting deputy head in 1992. In 1993 Jodie blackmailed Mr Robson into starting a girls' football team. In 1997 he clashed with Dai Hard who wanted to set up a school boxing club. Mr Robson's future at Grange Hill was jeopardised by Jessica's saucy school magazine. But in 1998 he got the job he'd always wanted - that of headmaster. Pressure of the Ofsted inspection caused Mr Robson to become alcoholic in 2000, but he sought counselling from Adam's father.

In 2001 Mr Robson had to cope with incompetent builders and the return of Mr Forbes as Grange Hill's new head of governors. This year, Mr Robson was seriously injured after tackling a mobile phone thief. During his absence Mr Deverill took over. Mr Robson decided to quit as head of Grange Hill. He confessed his feelings for Miss Carver - she was embarrassed at first but they married at the end of Series 25.

MR STEPHEN DEVERILL played by Nicolas Tizzard

Mr Deverill is Grange Hill's new deputy head and he's determined to strengthen discipline in the school. He comes from Congreve Hall, an elite public school, and firmly believes the pupils should know their place. Mr Robson is a "liberal do-gooder" and the school needs a kick up the backside in his opinion.

But there's more to Deverill than meets the eye. His real name is Wilcox - he was sacked from Congreve for throwing his weight around and assumed the identity of a colleague - Mr Deverill - to get the job at Grange Hill. Mr Deverill can make trouble where it doesn't exist and often puts his foot in it. Devious, evil and not to be trusted, he goes to extraordinary lengths to get what he wants.

After Mr Robson's accident Deverill took control of the school piece by piece. The other teachers were oblivious to him apart from Mrs Holmes - when she confronted him, he retaliated with a stern put-down. Deverill excluded Darren and Calvin on trumped-up "drug dealing" charges and made Ian a convenient scapegoat for the school graffiti. Deverill's hate for Ian grew and Deverill struck him. When confronted by pupils who knew his past, Deverill burned the evidence and fled the school before it went up in flames.

MISS JAYNE CARVER played by Sally Geoghegan
Miss Carver has been teaching English since 1995, when she came to Grange Hill as a probationer. She's dedicated to her subject, and is firm but fair with the pupils. She also has a caring nature and is a popular choice for students in need of an agony aunt.

In 1996 Miss Carver set up the school anti-bullying scheme. She was not amused when Mr Robson asked her to track down runaways Chris and Anna during her break in Scotland, as the pair were thought to be nearby. Miss Carver ran the school Amnesty group in 1997. She worried about how Rachel was managing with Year 9 and Animal Hill, but it all came together on the day. In 1998 Miss Carver offered Adam shelter at her place overnight. She persuaded him to return to school when details of his past became common knowledge. When Adam's father was released in 2000, Miss Carver acted as mediator between the two. She became friendly with Mr Xavier, which upset Dai Hard.

This year, Miss Carver was embarrassed when Mr Robson revealed he thought more of her than just a friend. But she realised they felt the same way and they married at the end of the series.

MISS EMILY FRASER played by Judith Wright
Miss Fraser is a newly-qualified maths teacher from Australia. She is also very attractive and has gained much male attention. Originally in England for just a year, she's now on Grange Hill's permanent staff. Her younger sister Katy spent a year at Grange Hill but now lives in the Midlands with her father. Miss Fraser is engaged to Michael Barton, Mrs Holmes' son.

Miss Fraser's fun approach to maths has been well-received by the pupils. She even ran sponsored classes for the homeless fundraiser. At home she tired of the amount of male visitors to her flat - unaware it was her, not Katy, they all wanted to see! This year has seen Emily become romantically linked to Michael, Mrs Holmes' long-lost son. Mrs Holmes was jealous as she thinks she'll lose him again; at the end of the series he proposed to her. Miss Fraser accepted!

In 2002 Miss Fraser had to cope with much hostility from Margaret over her engagement. When Margaret has a breakdown Michael goes to look after her; Miss Fraser realises they aren't right for each other and calls off the wedding.

MR GEOFF HANKIN played by Lee Cornes
Mr Hankin is the amiable and slightly eccentric science teacher. He has now been teaching at Grange Hill since 1990. He loves his subject and likes the pupils, but sometimes is unwittingly drawn into pupil scams. His Aunt Camelia is an opera singer.

In 1990 Mrs McClusky worried when pupils ran wild in his lessons. Then he brought Aunt Camelia in to help with an experiment and won the respect of his students. Mr Hankin was the brains behind Car Day in 1991 and the event was a huge success. Mrs Holmes was not amused in 1997 when Mr Hankin threw custard pies at himself in Year 7's class. In 2000 Mr Hankin tried his hand at stand-up comedy, and Colin and Kelly were impressed by his act. He also collaborated with Year 10 to stitch up the Ofsted inspectors.

Life took a sinister turn for Mr Hankin in 2001. Ozzie waged a campaign of terror on him as a payback for confiscating his stash of cigarettes; breaking into his house and even vandalising his car. Danny - battling to stop Ozzie's cigarette trade - provided a convenient scapegoat and Mr Hankin believed Danny was his tormentor. However, Mr Hankin soon discovered the truth and Ozzie was arrested. So traumatised was Mr Hankin he went on special leave, but has now returned to school fully refreshed.

MRS MARGARET HOLMES played by Rachel Bell
Mrs Holmes is deputy Head and teaches history. She was once a fearsome disciplinarian feared by her colleagues as much as the pupils, but has mellowed into a confident, positive teacher.

Mrs Holmes arrived at Grange Hill in 1997. Despite knowing Judi's home circumstances, she insisted Judi serve detention for shoddy homework. Sarah-Jane busted Judi out of detention and social services complained about Mrs Holmes' insensitivity. In 1998 Mrs Holmes competed against Mr Robson for the headship of Grange Hill. Mr Robson won, she became deputy. The following year Mrs Holmes gave support to Gemma who was having a rough time at home. When Year 9 demonstrated against Gemma being taken out of the school, Mrs Holmes supported them. Pupils began gossiping this year when they spotted Mrs Holmes with a young man. He turned out to be Michael, the son she gave up as a baby.

Margaret was hostile towards Emily over her engagement in 2002. Unable to cope as acting head and undermined by Deverill, she suffers a nervous breakdown. Michael goes to look after her.

MR DAI "HARD" JONES played by Clive Hill
Dai Hard is a former Army man and Grange Hill's head of sport. Unlike Mr Robson (who tried to veto his appointment) he believes sport should be about winning. Previously Dai Hard had a number of jobs including work for Top Of The Pops. He lives alone after his wife left him.

In 1997 Dai Hard coached budding boxer Alec on a one-to-one basis. He clashed with Mr Robson who thwarted his plan for a school boxing club. In 1998 Miss Carver caught him cheating in Caveman day. Dai Hard also gave Adam a hard time. Dai Hard tore strips off Nathan in 1999 after Calvin was hospitalised with a severe asthma attack (Nathan binned Calvin's inhaler thinking Calvin was joking). He later organised an outward-bound adventure day for the less-than-enthusiatic Year 11. In 2000 Dai Hard soldiered on confidently during the Ofsted inspection and tried wooing Miss Carver. In Series 24 he wasn't central to the storyline.

Dai Hard made a fool of himself chatting up Emily's friends in 2002. He tried speaking up for Ian to Mr Deverill and talked Ian down from the school roof when he threatened to jump.
